Badminton Racket Buying Guide: 3U vs 4U, Balance and Grip Size

· 1 min read · By the Xplore team

Badminton rackets are labelled with codes like 4U G5. Once you know what they mean, choosing is easy.

Weight: what 3U and 4U mean

  • 3U: 85–89 g. More power, slower to swing. Suits strong, attacking players.
  • 4U: 80–84 g. Faster and easier to control. The best choice for most beginners and doubles players.
  • 5U: 75–79 g. Very light, fast defence and drives.

Balance

  • Head-heavy: more weight in the head for powerful smashes. Better for singles and attacking players.
  • Even balance: an all-round mix of power and control. Best for beginners.
  • Head-light: quick to move for defence and net play, common in doubles.

Grip size: G4 or G5

The higher the number, the thinner the grip. G5 suits smaller hands and gives more wrist movement; G4 is slightly thicker. If unsure, choose the thinner grip: you can always add an overgrip, but you cannot make a thick grip thinner.

Shaft flexibility

A flexible shaft helps beginners generate power with less effort. Stiff shafts give more control to players with a fast, trained swing.

Strings and tension

Beginners play best at a lower tension (about 20–24 lbs), which gives a larger sweet spot. Higher tension adds control for advanced players.

The simple recommendation

  • Beginner: 4U, even balance, flexible shaft, G4/G5.
  • Attacking club player: 3U, head-heavy, medium-stiff shaft.
