How to Choose a Tape-Ball Cricket Bat: Size, Weight & Handle

· 1 min read · By the Xplore team

Tape-ball cricket is played with a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape. The ball is lighter than a leather ball but skids and swings, so the bat you need is different from a hard-ball bat.

1. Weight: lighter is faster

Most adults play best with a bat of about 1,100–1,200 g. A lighter bat means quicker bat speed and better control against fast tape-ball bowling. Strong hitters who mostly play big shots may prefer up to 1,250 g.

2. Size and handle

  • Short handle (SH): suits most adults up to about 6 ft.
  • Long handle (LH): for taller players.
  • Quick check: stand the bat upright beside your leg; the top of the handle should reach about your hip.

Junior sizes (Size 4–6) are for children and young teens.

3. Edges and profile

Tape-ball bats are often made with thick edges so that edges and miss-hits still travel. A flatter face gives a bigger sweet spot, which matters on uneven street and park pitches.

4. Wood

Tape-ball bats are commonly made from lighter woods such as poplar or Kashmir willow. They do not need knocking-in like English willow hard-ball bats, so they are ready to play.

5. Grip

A thicker or double grip absorbs the sting of a tape ball and helps control. Replace the grip when it starts to slip; a fresh grip tape is cheap and makes an old bat feel new.

Quick checklist

  • Weight around 1,100–1,200 g
  • Handle reaches your hip
  • Thick edges, flat face
  • Comfortable, non-slip grip

Frequently asked

What is the best weight for a tape-ball bat?

About 1,100–1,200 g for most adults. Lighter bats give faster bat speed against quick tape-ball bowling.

Short handle or long handle?

A short handle suits most adults up to about 6 ft. Taller players should choose a long handle.

Can I use a hard-ball bat for tape-ball cricket?

You can, but hard-ball bats are heavier and need knocking-in. A purpose-made tape-ball bat is lighter and ready to play.

Do tape-ball bats need knocking-in?

No. Tape-ball bats made from poplar or Kashmir willow do not need knocking-in.
