How to Hang a Gallery Wall at Home (Step-by-Step Guide)
· 2 min read · By the Xplore team
A gallery wall is a group of framed pieces hung together so they read as one design. It is the quickest way to make a plain wall feel finished, and it works in small flats as well as large living rooms.
What you need
- 2 or 3 frames (a matching set is easiest)
- A pencil, measuring tape and painter's tape
- Nails or adhesive hooks suited to your wall
- Paper cut to the size of each frame (optional, but it saves holes)
Step 1: Pick frames that belong together
Choose designs that share something: the same colour palette, the same font style or the same theme. Xplore frames are all 11 × 8 inches in the same frame style, so any two or three designs already look like a set.
Step 2: Plan the layout on the floor
Lay the frames on the floor in front of the wall and move them around until the group looks balanced. For beginners, these layouts always work:
- Two frames: side by side, centres level.
- Three frames: a straight row, or one on top with two below.
Step 3: Get the height right
Hang the centre of the whole group at eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or bed, leave 20–25 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the lowest frame.
Step 4: Keep the spacing even
Leave 5–8 cm between frames. Even gaps matter more than the exact number, so measure each one.
Step 5: Mark, then hang
Tape paper templates to the wall, mark the hanging point on each template, then hammer through the mark. Peel the paper away and hang the frames. Check with a level (a phone level app works).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Hanging too high. Most people do; keep the centre at eye level.
- Uneven gaps. Measure every gap, not just the first one.
- Too many styles. Two or three related designs look calmer than a random mix.

Frequently asked
How high should a gallery wall be?
Hang the centre of the group at eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or bed, leave 20–25 cm between the furniture and the lowest frame.
How far apart should frames be on a gallery wall?
Keep 5–8 cm between frames. Consistent spacing makes the group look intentional.
How many frames do I need for a gallery wall?
Two or three frames are enough for most walls in Pakistani homes. A set of 3 suits a sofa wall; a set of 2 suits a bedside or entryway wall.
Can I hang frames without drilling?
Yes. Lightweight frames like Xplore's 11 × 8 inch frames can be hung with good-quality adhesive hooks on smooth, painted walls. Check the hook's weight rating first.
