Football Sizes Explained: Size 3, 4 or 5?

Buying a football for a child or a team? The first question is size. Footballs come in three common sizes, and choosing the right one makes the game easier and more fun.
The three common sizes
| Size | Usually for |
|---|---|
| Size 3 | Young children |
| Size 4 | Juniors |
| Size 5 | Teenagers and adults |
Size 5 is the standard ball for teenage and adult football. Leagues and schools may have their own rules for junior age groups, so check if you're buying for a team.
Why size matters
A ball that's too big or heavy for a young player makes kicking and control harder and less fun. The right size helps children learn good technique.
Pressure
A ball that's too soft won't travel or bounce properly; one that's too hard is uncomfortable to kick and head. Check the pressure before games and top it up with a ball pump. Our guide on inflating and caring for a ball explains how.
Where you'll play
Street and concrete surfaces are tougher on a ball than grass. Whatever you play on, wipe the ball after use and store it indoors.
