How to Make Your Tape Ball Bat Last Longer: 7 Simple Habits

A good tape ball bat isn't cheap, so it's worth looking after. None of these habits take more than a minute, and together they make a real difference to how long a bat lasts.

1. Use the right ball

Tape ball bats are made for tape balls and tennis balls. A leather (hard) ball can crack or dent the blade. If you play hard ball too, keep a separate bat for it.

2. Keep it dry

Water and damp are bad for any wooden bat. Don't leave it outside overnight, and if it gets wet, wipe it and let it dry naturally at room temperature.

3. Keep it out of the heat

Don't leave your bat in direct sun or in a hot car boot during summer. Extreme heat is hard on wood and on the stickers and finish.

4. Store it the right way

Stand the bat on its handle rather than its toe, or lay it flat. Standing it on the toe for long periods puts the most vulnerable part of the blade on the floor.

5. Wipe it after dusty matches

A quick wipe with a dry cloth after playing on a dusty street or ground keeps grit off the face and edges.

6. Replace the grip

A worn grip makes you squeeze harder and lose control. A fresh bat grip costs little and is easy to fit; see our guide on how to fit a new grip.

7. Use a cover

A bat cover keeps the blade clean in the kit bag. The MM Swinger comes with a bat cover and inner gloves in the box.

A note on finishes

Some bats are finished at the factory to help them last. Our UK range, for example, is finished with an epoxy coating, a hardener liquid that hardens and seals the wood surface, and lacquer for shine. Good habits still matter, whatever the finish.
